So I finally got a chance to sit down and watch the MLP: FiM Season 3 finale after a whole day of Facebook messages from Brony Groups about how much they enjoyed it, it was awesome, etc.
To be completely honest, I felt really lost the entire episode. There were loads of unanswered questions I felt, the whole thing seemed rushed when it wasn't repeating the same message portrayed in the 'Return of Harmony' episodes and it seems like things can only go downhill from here, if the show even continues. It had a sense of finality that said, 'Yeah, that's about it. You can go home now people, nothing to see here.'
Some of the unanswered questions in this episode included; why would Starswirl the bearded work on such a spell in the first place? I understand changing one's cutie mark could be important if your interests and goals change over your life, but to force you to do something that's obviously not your talent? And also, why would it be focused on the elements of harmony? Why couldn't Twilight be a unicorn princess? Was it really necessary to change her physically to show her superiority? Where can the series possibly go now that she's a Princess and probably not going to live in Ponyville anymore and everything is totally shiny?
This episode was also terribly annoying. I always enjoy the sprinkles of songs throughout the show, but the Season Finale really overdid it. In the words of the Nostalgia Critic, "Don't people just talk in this world!? Hell, ordering your lunch would probably result in a music number!" or something to that effect. When it wasn't confusing or downright doing the exact same thing the "Return of Harmony" episodes did, it was just annoying.
All in all, Season 3 kind of ended my adoration of the show. Although there were a couple episodes I'll revisit (like 'Keep Calm and Flutter On' and the Babs Seed episode), I just hated the way they no longer downplayed the characters flaws and removed the subtleties that drew me to the show in the first place. I dunno, I could go on and on about how almost every episode this season rubbed me the wrong way (especially the Spike episodes), but I figure I'll keep those to myself unless asked. XD
Have you noticed all the princesses are alicorns? I think it's a requirement for some reason.
For the Starswirl question... my guess is he was an academic, and academics have a nasty habit of doing things to see if it can be done. whatever it was he was trying to accomplish with the spell, he obviously failed anyway.
